Maté
The origins of maté
Like your organic tea with character? Discover yerba maté leaves and their benefits in a stimulating infusion with a distinctive taste.
Rooted in Paraguayan, Argentinian and Brazilian cultures, yerba maté is prized for its invigorating properties. The Guarani people were the first to drink an infusion of yerba maté leaves to ‘ward off tiredness’ and ‘lift their spirits’.
Maté was also used to prepare medicinal drinks. In the 16th century, accounts by Spanish explorers introduced this tea to Europe, where it grew in popularity. The Spanish were the first Europeans to drink an infusion of yerba maté leaves.
In South America, maté brings people together and is an integral part of the continent’s history and culture. In Argentina, Paraguay and Uruguay, maté tea — or simply maté — is even considered an emblematic drink. If someone invites you to share a maté, they’re inviting you to enjoy a moment together.
When should you drink maté?
Yerba maté is ideal when you want to recharge and feel revitalised, provided you prepare it properly, paying attention to the brewing time and water temperature.
You can enjoy this yerba maté leaf infusion throughout the day for a boost when you need it. If you’re sensitive to caffeine, though, avoid drinking it in the evening and choose a caffeine-free infusion instead.

The health benefits of maté
Maté enthusiasts are united in praising its many health benefits. Made from the leaves of the yerba maté plant, this traditional South American drink is brewed in a gourd and sipped through a bombilla. Its caffeine content gives you a boost of energy.
Unlike coffee, maté provides a gentler, longer-lasting lift, helping you stay focused throughout the day. As well as giving you energy, maté aids digestion by helping to break down food, thanks to its natural compounds.
Known for its detox properties, maté encourages the body to eliminate toxins and may support weight-loss efforts. As an infusion, it is rich in antioxidants that contribute to cardiovascular protection.
